While our average downstream and upstream speeds across our 60 odd whiteboxes remain nominally constant (8Mbps and 1Mbps respectively), we saw a decrease in latency from 50ms down to around 25ms between Tue 5th and Thu 7th February.

Latency is a measure of the time it takes an internet message to traverse from your modem to the internet, irresepctive of the size of the data. this measure is very important for real-time video and voice over the internet. Satellite services regularly deal with latencies of around 700ms (three quarters of a second!) for example. BT must be fiddling with something and hopefully responding to demand for the increased bandwidth with more users gradually upgrading to ADSL2+ (up to 20 Mbps).

We must watch carefully to see if we're still getting slower speeds at busy times such as evening news, supper time etc., or whether the speed of our line is the sole factor that matters.

Thanks,
